My 100 most favorite songs

There are two kinds of music fans: The fans of artists and the fans of songs.

I used to be a fan of artists. As one, I had to like every song of every artist that I like. Years later, after my introduction to Japanese pop (Jpop) artists AKB48 and fripSide, I become a renewed music fan, this time a fan of songs. Because I realize I have the right not to love, memorize, or dance to every song of every artist that I like. I have to pick out the songs among their discographies, the ones that I can truly love and consider the soundtracks of my life.

As a collector of sorts, I "collected" some "favorite" songs way back in college, when I was still a college junior. Music was my life. I was never into high school or college romance, was never into booze or drugs, was never into fraternities, outings, or late night parties. Straight edge? Nerd? Studious type? Nay! I'm just plain lazy or say, I value my life. Should I hanker after those things, I wouldn't be in the library, compiling the list I am about to share now.

But enough talk. Here are my 100 most favorite songs as of 2006, in no particular order:

You may notice that most of the songs in the list are pop songs and a number of them are boy band pop. Well, it was the most popular material on FM radio. Some of the songs in the list are not even popular among my peers, and I can't only know a few people who knew about some of the artists, like The Killers and t.A.T.u. - people I really knew. And yes, I got no access to the Internet then. My first experience with the Internet was when I got into college, and it was even a slow connection.

Those were the times. You won't hear almost all these songs anymore, except if you pass by a karaoke/videoke bar or if someone take time to dust off their old CDs or cassette tapes.

What's your list of favorite songs? Compile and share them to the world today.
